How radiofrequency can help you achieve your cosmetic goals

Radiofrequency treatment aesthetic rejuvenation

Is your practitioner recommending you try a radiofrequency treatment? Perhaps you have some fine lines and wrinkles you want to wipe away, or maybe you are looking to remove that pesky bit of fat under your chin or around your tummy.

Although its use as a cosmetic treatment for both body contouring and skin tightening is relatively novel, radiofrequency is not a new technology. In fact, radiofrequency has been used in various branches of medicine and research such as radiology and cardiology for more than 75 years!

What is radiofrequency?

Radiofrequency is a fluctuating electric current of electricity that creates heat energy and delivers this at specific temperatures to the tissues in your body. It’s a treatment that is commonly recommended by aesthetic practitioners to tighten skin and improve lines, wrinkles and sagging without invasive surgery.

But how does heat help? Adding heat to your skin in a controlled way stimulates your own body to produce collagen and elastin via what’s called the ‘wound-healing response’. Collagen is a protein that provides structure and framework to your body and skin, giving it its firmness.

This collagen remodelling is what yields the desired skin tightening and improvement in the appearance of your fine lines and loose skin. The heating can also be used to destroy fat cells for fat reduction.

The treatment usually involves a practitioner applying a pad or probe to the treatment area, which is connected to a radiofrequency device in an aesthetic clinic. The energy can also be delivered through microneedles, which is a different kind of treatment featuring small needles that physically penetrate heat into the skin.

What results can be achieved with radiofrequency?

Radiofrequency can treat the skin and fat in all skin tones. It can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the skin, even skin texture, firm sagging skin, and restore the skin to look more youthful and refreshed. It’s commonly used on the face, neck, décolletage, stomach, and even the arms for cosmetic purposes. It is also becoming a popular treatment for intimate rejuvenation, having the ability to help individuals with vaginal laxity concerns, which will be discussed in more detail another time!

Treatment time will vary, but commonly takes around 15-30 minutes, and several sessions will likely be needed to achieve results.

Of course, radiofrequency cannot be used as a substitute for surgery and the treatment is not effective for every person. Your practitioner will conduct a thorough consultation and tell you if other treatments are most suitable to you, or if radiofrequency should be used in combination with other treatments.

What are the risks of radiofrequency treatments?

Radiofrequency is generally considered to be a safe procedure when performed by a qualified professional. You might feel a heating sensation during the treatment, but it should be tolerable and not painful. You may experience some slight redness of the treated area and the nature of the procedure means there is a potential risk of burns, although they are rare. There is also the potential to experience pigmentation changes to the skin following the procedure.

What types of radiofrequency treatments are available?

There are many different radiofrequency devices available for both body contouring and skin tightening. Some of these include:

3JUVE, Accent Prime, Exilis Ultra 360, TempSure, Thermage, TriPollar RF, Venus Freeze Plus, plus many more!

Your practitioner will be able to explain what device is best for you and your bespoke concerns, so you can be on your way to achieving your cosmetic goals.
