Laser Lipolysis

Melt your fat away with this body contouring and shaping procedure

laser lipolysis

You may have heard of fat freezing treatments that can help remove stubborn body fat that no matter how much you exercise just won’t go away… in fact, even celebrities such as model and presenter Lisa Snowdon are raving about this treatment!

But did you know that as well as fat freezing, it’s also possible to melt your fat away to reach your body-shaping goals?

What is laser lipolysis?

Much like fat freezing cryolipolysis (but the opposite end of the thermometer), laser lipolysis – or laser lipo – uses laser energy to heat the fat on a particular body area to extreme temperatures which causes a process called apoptosis – fat cell death. This is done without damaging or hurting the skin above the fat!

Once the fat cells have died, the body will naturally remove the cells through the lymphatic system, and they will be excreted by the body. Although the procedure is commonly called ‘fat melting’, it doesn’t physically ‘melt’ the fat away.

Types of laser lipolysis

There are two types of laser lipolysis: non-invasive and minimally invasive.

A non-invasive laser lipolysis treatment involves a practitioner applying an applicator to a specific part of your body. You will feel cooling and heating sensations until the treatment is complete, usually after around 25 minutes. Several treatments are usually needed, and results are usually seen within 6-12 weeks.

In a minimally-invasive laser lipolysis treatment (often called laser liposuction), a practitioner will inject local anaesthetic and create an incision in your skin. They will then insert a laser probe which will be directed to the fat to heat it, before then the fat will be sucked out or left inside the body to be absorbed. The treatment will take 1-2 hours. Results are usually seen within 4-12 weeks and more than one treatment is usually needed.

What are the benefits?

The main benefit is that laser lipolysis will permanently destroy the fat cells without surgery! All kinds of areas on the body can be treated, including the flanks, stomach, back, inner and outer thighs, the back, arms, under the chin, and even the calves and cankles!

Due to the temperature that is being placed in the area, patients might also notice a tightening effect, further enhancing their results.

In one study, 57 patients with fat under the chin and mild to moderate skin laxity were treated with a minimally-invasive laser lipolysis device. Following the treatment, 97% of the patients were satisfied with the results of the treatment

The risks to this treatment include mild pain, swelling, bruising, injury to the skin due to the heat, uneven texture, and nerve damage. If an incision to the skin is made, minor scaring is possible, as is infection. However, these are really rare when treatment is performed by a trained and skilled practitioner.

Of course, your newly sculpted figure will need to be maintained, and the treatment doesn’t replace a healthy lifestyle with correct diet and physical exercise. Although the fat cells are destroyed, if you gain a significant amount of weight, your body will store the fat so results may not be permanent.

You should also consider that laser lipolysis might not be the best treatment for you. There are other options available to consider like radiofrequency, HIFU, cryolipolysis, liposuction or cosmetic surgery. Your aesthetic practitioner is the best person to speak to about what treatment is right for your specific concerns.

What type of laser lipolysis treatments are available?

There are many different types of laser lipolysis devices available on the market. Always ask your practitioner what device they use and research them prior to treatment.

Some of the common types of devices in the UK include: SmartLipo, SculpSure, Smartlipo Triplex and Strawberry Laser Lipo.
