Reducing Signs of Stress

Find out how to reduce visible signs of stress on your face

stress

Rather than a desire to look younger, or tighter, Dr Catherine Denning’s patients are largely asking for her help to look less ‘stressed’ and ‘fatigued.’ This demand is reflected in wider trends thanks to the emergence of image-obsessed social platforms and widespread anxiety triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Here, Dr Denning shares her insight into the powerful lifestyle and skincare choices that target stress on the face.

Beauty Sleep

Lack of sleep can have many detrimental effects on us both mentally but also physically. It can make us feel terrible and mean we also certainly don’t look our best either! The NHS suggests most adults need between six and nine hours of sleep every night. There’s a reason it’s called beauty sleep! Lack of enough rest can cause our skin to become dry and lackluster due to the moisture and pH levels in our skin dropping. As you sleep, your body’s cells regenerate, especially at skin level so without giving yourself this time, you’re going to probably wake up with dark circles!

Medical Strength Skincare

There is no one solution to manifestations of stress on our face, we need to apply a variety of approaches. Skincare is a great first step to minimising the effects of stress on skin ageing. I recommend using prescription strength ingredients like vitamin A (tretinoin, retinol and retinoic acids), vitamin C (l-ascorbic acid 10-15%), peptides and a good SPF (separate from moisturiser and makeup, with a minimum protection factor of 30). These are crucial in maximising your skins health and ability to make collagen and elastin as well as maintaining a radiant complexion.

Skin Boosters

Skin boosters (hydrating injections) such as Profhilo and Redensity_1 help to hydrate crepey, lackluster skin and nourish the dermis directly. They use hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring moisturiser in the face, these products help replace some of the bounce in the skin but also help to boost collagen production.
